Congratulations to LouKingDiamondPhillipsHeadScrewdriver for winning the Spring Season of All-Star Pop Culture, and taking the title, trophy and the prize pool of $759.00!

LouKing dominated the night in both the Final Four round and the Championship. The Final Four round started with Timmy! and The Mogs (in on a Wild Card spot after SFO's GAPCOMGARGO declined to travel) rounding out the SEA side of things, and Firecrotch representing SFO. LouKing kick started the night in the first round with a perfect score in the category of "TV Pitches", the only perfect score of the match. After an audio round called "Lyrically Speaking" where teams needed to complete the lyrics of the audio clip, LouKing increased their lead with a 7/10. Next up was "A Current Affair" and it was time for Firecrotch to burn bright, with a 9/10 for the round, pulling into second place. With only a single round left LouKing had a lock on a Championship seat, and it was a battle for 2nd place. "Box Office Bombs" was the category and both the Mogs and Firecrotch got a near perfect 9/10, but with Firecroth in the lead going into the round, they win the second seat in the Championship! A hearty congrats to both The Mogs and Timmy! for finishing 3rd and 4th respectively, and for playing a great season.

So the Champiohnship turned out to be the regional battle that we had all hoped it would be: SEA vs. SFO. The teams were incredibly evenly matched, and the game was literally a nail-biter. The Championship was a head-to-head competition, with teams chosing categories for their opponents, so strategy was running high and the air was thick with comeptition and rivalry. LouKing came out to an early lead, but not by much as most of the first half was a 1-point see-saw match. Firecrotch fell behind a bit mid-half, but managed to make up some lost ground with a few categories to their liking. The first half ended with LouKing at 22 and Firecrotch at 19, still either team's game!

With Firecrotch correctly answering the first question of the second half, it become a tied game that would go back and forth for most of the half. Firecrotch pulled ahead with "Monty Python Movies" "Dope Rhymes" "Tom Cruise" and "Do you Know Jack?", but LouKing fought back with a 6 question run of correct answers/steals that gave them a 4 points lead. When Firecroth came within a point with a correct answer on "Spinal Tap", LouKing decided to use their Multiplier on the graphic category of "Superheroes". Answering the question correctly gave them double points and a 7 point lead. Firecrotch fought back with their multiplier on the "Lost" question, and brought it back to a 1 point game with only 1 question left for LouKing. The category was "Seinfeld" and they answered correctly for the win.

A definite crowd favorite, LouKing started the night in command, and held that command for most of the Final Four and the Championship. They kept the #1 rank in the Seattle Division for a majority of the Season, and clinched the Divisional Title, and moved on to play strong and win the League title. They are definately a team worthy of being ALL-STAR POP CULTURE CHAMPIONS!

Congratulations to Piranha Farm in our Seattle Division and Firecrotch in our San Francisco Division for winning the Audio Scramble! Both teams are the recipient of 50 points added to their respective seasonal scores.

This Thursday will be the second to last qualifying quiz of this Season. That's right, its this week and next to get yourself into the Post Season on August 10th.

A couple weeks ago we saw the 3-Minute Mental Floss round which gave everyone a chance to pad their points by answering a single question. This week will be your last opportunity to earn some extra points.

This week we will provide you with the Audio Scramble. A single audio clip consisting of short bits of many recognizable pop songs will be played. You will have 2 minutes to write down as many song titles as you can recognize. The team that gets the most correct answers will receive 50 points directly added to their Seasonal Score!

Post Season Info...

The Post Season will consist of a single night of events at Jillian's in Seattle on Friday, August 10th. The night will start with the Final Four round, which will be a 4 -team quiz consisting of 4 rounds of 10 questions each. No halftime questions, no Bonus Round questions... just a pure quiz.

The 2 teams with the highest scores from the Final Four round will immediately move on to the Championship Round. The Championship round will have each team go head-to-head against each other, through a series of 12 questions in each half. At the start of each half, the teams will receive a list of 24 categories that have been used this season. Opposing teams will choose the category for each team to answer from (this is where the Results page comes in handy!). Once a category is chosen, it is out of play for the rest of the game. If a team answers correctly they receive 3 points. If the team cannot answer in 30 seconds, the opposing team can steal the question with a correct answer for 1 point. Each team will also have an optional "multiplier" to use in the second half. Multipliers will double the points for a single question, but will also double the steal points as well!

To qualify for the post season, your team must be ranked in the top 2 of either the Seattle Division or the San Francisco Division at the close of the 11th week of qualifiers. San Francisco teams travelling to Seattle will be provided lodging on the night of the Post Season, courtesy of Courtyard Marriott.

We'd like to welcome everyone in San Francisco on board our little trivia train. San Francisco will be a new "Division" of the league starting this season. As a seperate Division, San Francisco will be playing at the same time, on the same night as Seattle. Both Divisions will be receiving the same questions, so we can really determine who is the best overall team in the league.

But that doesn't mean that you must compete against MORE teams to get to the post season. Each Division will have it's own ranking list, and teams will compete for a #1 rank within their own Division, not across the league as a whole.

If you have friends or family in the Bay area, clue them into the hottest thing to happen to pop culture since Paris Hilton!

Changes to the Post Season

If your team played in our "beta" season last winter, you'll want to know about some changes that were made to the structure of our Post Season. These changes were made after some player feedback, and we feel will better the league play on a whole:

Top 2 from each Division move on to the Final Four round. Since we've got (potentially) twice as many teams, playing in 2 cities, we're making it fair to everyone and inviting the top 2 ranked teams from each Division to the Final Four round.

One more week of Qualifiers. This season will have 11 weeks of qualifying nights. The Final Four and the Championship rounds will be held in a single night in Seattle (stay tuned for details)

Final Four round will be a 4 team standard quiz, just like the qualifying nights (no head-to-head like last season) Top 2 teams in points from the Final Four will move on to the Championship, held that same night.

The Championship will feature Head-to-Head competition, like last season, but we have omitted the "solo" portion of the structure. Teams will answer each question as a group. All other aspects of the Championship format have remained intact.

The cost each week is still $10, and we will still be providing 50% of that to each night's winner. This season 25% of each team's entry will go to the team that finishes #1 in their Division, and 25% will go to the winner of the Championship. This gives all teams more opportunity to earn cash!

Championship Results & Recap

The Stage was set for a battle 11 weeks in the making: The Ooh La La's vs. Piranha Farm for the very first All-Star Pop Culture Championship.

Off to a slow start, Piranha Farm got the only points on the board after a rough 6 rounds, with 3 points and 3 steals, But The Ooh La La's fought back by gettting the score a little more manageable by round 10, at 6-4. The final rounds of the first half saw a Piranha Farm visciously scoring points to retain their lead, while Ooh La La's held their own. At one point, The Ooh La La's were down by 8 pts., but rallied to finish the 1st half only down 1 pt., by not allowing Piranha Farm a chance to steal for the last 12 rounds. Halftime score: Piranha Farm 21, The Ooh La La's 20.

The second half began with the Ooh La La's stealing the first question to tie the game at 21 pts. each. The rest of the half saw a see-saw scoreboard that went back and forth for most of the play, with the lead switching after each team's answer. Teams performed so well in the second half there were only 4 steals total! By Round 18 The Ooh La La's had taken a slight lead of 39-37, but fell into a rut for the rest of the match, as Piranha Farm answered their questions and made a couple steals to take a 5 point lead. With only 2 questions left, The Ooh La La's chose to use their Multiplier for the maximum amount of 5x. When they neglected to answer the Celebrity Mugshots question correctly, Piranha Farm got a 5 point steal, increasing their lead to 10 points, and securing their win.

When the dust settled, Piranha Farm was victorious in a 49-42 win over the Ooh La La's, and took home the $835 Championship Prize!

Jason, Steve, Andy & Kate - Piranha Farm

Piranha Farm was a "come from behind" team, that played a VERY strategic game, utilizing every aspect of the format to their advantage. They never won a Qualifying Week, and were the lowest ranked team in the post-season, which caused some feelings about their place in it. It was obvious from the crowd response at the Championship that Piranha Farm was not the favorite to win. When asked about their "Bad Guy" image in the league, they had this to say:

"Without the all important bonus questions, we perform better than most teams in all rounds. The format of the semi's and the finals favor a team that consistently answers questions right during regular play. The numbers reflect this fact very clearly" - Jason

"Bad guys? No problem. Being hated makes me want to win even more. If any team seems to think they are better than us, we'll be around next season with the same lineup, so they can take their best shot." - Steve

"I really don't care what other people think about me or the team; all that matters is how we view ourselves. I am very proud of our team and of the victory. We have to tip our hats to a very tough Team 42 we faced in the Final Four and an even tougher opponent in the Ooh La La's we faced in the Championship. They were both very solid and gave us a strong run for the money." - Andy

They obviously have embraced their new image, and welcome anyone to knock them off their Championship pedestal next season.

Championship This Thursday

It's been 11 weeks in the making and the stage is set for this Thursday's All-Star Pop Culture Season Championship with a prize of $835.00!

In the 2 Head-to-Head matches last week, The Ooh La La's defeated the Hoopleheads, by a mere 2 points in a 33-31 victory, while ranked #1 42 suffered a beat from the come-from-behind #4 team Piranha Farm with a final score of 42-37.

This Thursday we are celebrating not only the Championship match, but a successful first season of this new take on a pub quiz night. Everyone who came out and supported us should please come by and enjoy a free buffet, and a great head-to-head match to watch!

In addition, we'll be giving away some great fun prizes in a few random "solo" quizzes (no team required!).
The match starts at 7pm. So if you haven't come by yet, this is a great chance to see what you might be working towards NEXT season, and meet some of the teams you'll come up against.

Post-Season Info

During both weeks of the Post-season, all teams are encouraged to come by and watch the action. Not only will this be a unique format that has never been used in this area, but we will also be having a "side-quiz" for the teams that aren't participating, with fun prizes given out to those that get correct answers.

In addition, for the Championship Event on April 12th, Jillian's has informed us that they will be giving you a free buffet! This is their way of saying "thank you" to all the teams that came out this season and made it such a success.

So whether you are 5th or 30th at the end of this week, do come out and celebrate All-Star Pop Culture's first season.

Please note that the scores have changed ever so slightly, which has affected some teams' ranking within the league. Please visit the Scores page, and hit refresh on your browser, to see the current standings as we head into the final qualifying week of the season.

For those that are interested, here is a brief explanation: When the league was first conceived, we had no idea of the growth, and rate of growth, that we've seen. With an average of 18-19 teams per week, you've made this one of the most popular Quiz Nights in the area, and we thank you very much for that.

We recognized that some areas would feel the strain of such growth, and immediately started focussing on them. One of the major areas was scorekeeping. Each night, the scores are recorded and totalled by hand. This would not be a problem with 7-10 teams, but with 20 it opens the door for human error. Since week 3, we've been working on a better solution for scorekeeping and tablulation. Unfortunately, this process takes some time, and along the way we will run into problems.

We continue to thank you for helping forge something completely unique, and hope that you can weather the 'bumps' in the road. We promise that you won't be disappointed... this is only the beginning!

Well after a, self-admittedly, tough week in the theme of 'all things 80's', the scoreboard is as close as its been all season. With only 41 points separating 2nd place from 10th place, it really is a whole new game.

We would also like to inform all teams that The Mogs were given the opportunity to choose a category for finishing in 2nd place in Week 7. They have chosen "Rated R for Nudity". This category will center around celebrity nude scenes in motions pictures.

Back to our regularly general-themed quiz this week, it will be the second to last week of qualifiers for the season. Those that just don't see a post-season in your future, you still have the big cash prize to come out and play for. We've been getting about 20 teams for the last few weeks, so $100.00 is nothing to scoff at when it comes to pub quizes!

We are also diligently working on setting up the next season as well, with lots of new surprises we think you'll love! Please stay tuned for all the details as they become solidified. Rest assured, All-Star Pop Culture is only in it's infancy!

The winner's were announced for the 2007 Oscars, and teams were on the edge of their seat and losing sleep over how they did in the All-Star Pop Culture Oscar Pool.

We had 14 teams fill out ballots, with a 5-way tie for 2nd place the team on top was Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner! They are proud recipient of the total prize package, which includes: 6 Scarecrow Video Movie Guides, 6 Scarecrow Video T-shirts, 6 coupons good for 2 free rentals at Scarecrow Video, 2 tickets to the Thunderbirds, 4 passes to a screening of the 300, their very own "Oscar-like" Statuette, and 50 points in the league! We are back in action this Thursday night, 2/22, after a week off.

This week will be your last chance to submit your Oscar Ballot for our Oscar Pool, too. Each team is eligible to fill out their very own Oscar Ballot. After the winners are announced this Sunday, we'll see who got the most picks correct. The winner will receive lots of prizes, including some nice shwag from Scarecrow Video, tickets to see the Thunderbirds, 50 points in the league, and their very own Oscar trophy!

Also this week: New and Improved audio and video! That's right, no more cramming into the main room so you can see the big screen, and hear the audio questions. We have worked with Jillian's to tap into their video system, and will be (finger's crossed!) on all the screens, including the bar. The audio will be tapped into the soud system as well. So you can choose seating with ease!

ASPC Oscar Pool Announced!

We love the Oscars. We don't just love the Oscars, we love the ceremony, the drama surrounding the event, the anticipation of who will win... and sometimes better yet.... who will lose.

We are proud to announce that this year, All-Star Pop Culture has put together an "Oscar Pool". That's right, each and every team that comes out and plays in our quiz is elligible to fill out their very own Oscar Ballot. Picking from the nominees who you think will win each award, we'll take the team with the most correct picks and shower them with prizes!

In only our second week out of the gate, attendance at All-Star Pop Culture blew even our expectations with 20 TEAMS showing up last night.

Fighting their way to the top of the night were new-comers Marsha, Marsha, Marsha, tied with returning team The Mogs with 71 points. But 42 remains at the top of the overall standings for the season.

One note about last night's quiz... It was brought to our attention that the answer for the Half-time Multiple Choice question, BoyzUp, is infact a real boy band (actually it's "Boys Up"). While we can tell you that this name was made up by the ASPC quiz team, we find it very strange that this name exists. As a result, we have removed all points earned for that question (since there actually was no correct answer). Rest assured, this did not change the night's winners or the payout of the prize pool.

Next week, Feb. 8th, we are back to our regularly scheduled time slot: 7:00 p.m. at Jillian's.

UPDATE: After much deliberation and counsel at ASPC Main Offices, the dispute that was lodged regarding the Half-time question has been reversed. The question was stated: "Pick the name that was NOT a Boy Band". The intended correct choice, BoysUp, turned out to be a real group, but a fabricated "mock" group. While they received some press, and put out a controvercial video (with resulting documentary), they never released a CD. ASPC waxed and waned on what, exactly makes a Boy Band a "Boy Band". We settled on the fact that a Boy Band must have some sort of music for sale at some point in their career, and therefore we overruled the previous dispute. All scores are corrected.
