Post-Season Info

Attention All Teams: Even if your team does not have a chance to qualify, you should read this info.

During both weeks of the Post-season, all teams are encouraged to come by and watch the action. Not only will this be a unique format that has never been used in this area, but we will also be having a "side-quiz" for the teams that aren't participating, with fun prizes given out to those that get correct answers.

In addition, for the Championship Event on April 12th, Jillian's has informed us that they will be giving you a free buffet! This is their way of saying "thank you" to all the teams that came out this season and made it such a success.

So whether you are 5th or 30th at the end of this week, do come out and celebrate All-Star Pop Culture's first season.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Trevor's girlfriend's team, Pirahna Farm, miraculously won the whole thing despite total domination by The Ooh La La's and 42 all season...it's a clever little money making scheme when you divide $800 by 7.

As in other contests/games where money or prizes are involved, relatives and LIVE-IN GIRLFRIENDS are not allowed to participate. A little shady if you ask me...Can't wait to see who takes it all home!

Sounds like a lot of sour grapes to me.

Yeah...I'm sure Trevor would jeapordize his long standing business relationship with Jillian's (ASPC, Seattle Poker Open) for a 1/7th share of $800.

Get real people!!

Not only that, but, to do *all* that work all season doing research/coming up with questions/running a website...all for $100.00.

Say what you want, but if you want to call us cheats, don't hide behind some anonymous blog comment.

We made the finals, and we will win, on our own, with no help from anyone. What got us to the finals was strategy. Other teams lived and died by the bonus. After week 6 or 7, we made a conscious decision to never put ourselves in a position to lose points, so we bet 0 for every bonus. Team 42 made 126 points on the bonus and halftime alone, while we made 4. Take away the ability to make mondo points on one question and the field gets way more level. Take out halftime and bonus questions and the scores would look a little different:

Piranha Farm - 388
Hoopleheads - 383
Ooh La La's - 346
Team '42' - 323

To put in small words for you to easily digest:
A) The other teams got out-played.
B) The format of the finals and semi-finals favors a team that consistently scores points every round.

So get over your conspiracy theories and myopic world views.

For the record, here are some facts that the ones hiding behind an "anonymous' moniker might not realize:

- Erika, my girlfriend, stopped playing for Piranha Farm by Week 5, on her own accord because she felt she was not a stong contribution to the team.

- Piranha Farm stopped risking ANY points on the Bonus Round question, a strategy that they told me would help them beat other teams, and it worked for them (obviously). You can consult the Results page to clearly see this.

- Had the Halftime question not been contested in the 10th week (by another team), Piranha Farm would not have made the Final Four (something that was beyond both QM and Piranha Farm's control)

I take offense at any suggestion that I might allow one team more of an advantage than another. ASPC is not a "hobby" for me, but a way that I make a living. I spend about 30 hours a week getting the quiz together, and enjoy every minute of it. I've put a lot of time and energy into making it the best format out there so that everyone can have a fun time.

$835.00 is not that much money, when you put it into perspective of a season of 12 weeks of getting paid by Jillian's. The idea that I would jeopardize that is ridiculous.

I'm sure you are feeling bad that your team could not perform as well as you'd wished, but please don't be a sore loser. It only spoils the game for those that are good sports.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Let's back this train up a bit. Trevor's girlfriend is on a team? Isn't that like a conflict of interest or something? On a side note: I can't believe people are fighting about this.
P.S. Here's some constructive criticism: get rid of the halftime question!

whoa. some of y'all put some thought into this. I, for one, don't really care, but QM's girlfriend was on a team? Not that I want to accuse QM of any wrongdoing, but having a live-in girlfriend who's on a team does seem to set up a conflict of interest as masterofdisguise suggests. Even if there's no active or intentional sharing of information, there can still be inadvertant looking over shoulders, comments, search histories left in internet search engines, etc. As we all saw on the scores, even if it led to only getting a couple questions right, that's enough to make a difference.

But what bothers me more is that as a cash-game, it seems that all those concerned would be very interested in not having a situation in which a conflict of interest could potentially be imputed in the first place. It's all about image, and image-wise, all the explanations etc. don't change the fact that QM has a live-in girlfriend that was playing for a team in a cash game that QM ran. This kind of stuff just isn't allowed in other professional contexts, and I wonder why it happened in the first place.

I'm sure that nobody did anything wrong intentionally, but creating a situation that sets up conflicts of interest and the potential for inadvertant disclosure isn't good for anybody.

I concur with uninterested party. It just seems a little sketchy. I suppose it's too late now, but for future reference, it might be beneficial for QM's girlfriend to sit out. If she'd like to participate, maybe she could contribute to question writing. A little female perspective and insight would be refreshing.

I signed on to check the scores from Thursday, and lo and behold, controversy!

Bad on you anonymous people for making some unsubstantiated allegations. But at the same time, I dunno why Trevor should be offended- he should have had the good sense not to allow his girlfriend to be on a team in the first place. To that extent, I totally agree with uninterested party and master.

As for Steve- wow. Way to be condescending! Apparently having intimate knowledge of pop culture doesn't translate into good manners.

And kudos to Trevor for not deleting the comments, even the anonymous ones, and meeting the comments head-on. Gotta respect that.

It's only b/c I live for stuff like this. Sorry buddy (Trevor), it's just not in your best interest to have your girlfriend participate when money's on the line and you're trying to run a legit operation. Coincidence? Maybe. I won't bore you with probability. And Steve, let's unbunch those tight flowery panties you seem to be wearing. Unless they're your good luck charm, in which case, good luck! You're going up against formidable opponents.

I find it amusing that nobody said a thing about Trevor's girlfriend playing on a team until they made it into the finals.

Sore losers!!!

Bottom line...Trev is an honest business man, and I wouldn't question his ethics for one second.

I also don't question Trevor's ethics per se. However, I do question his common sense. I wish I would have known his girlfriend was on a team during the season; I certainly would have had a word with him about it. But the fact is it wasn't even disclosed. Had Trevor asked everybody at the beginning and everybody consented, that's cool. But as it stands, there was no disclosure, no barring her from participating, and that's just not cool.

I couldn't care less about not making it to the finals. If I had cared, I probably wouldn't have had as much fun as I did. But as a professional, I'm always on guard for potential conflicts of interest, and it seems to me Trevor should be too, especially for one as obvious as this.

As for you Jason, thanks for calling me a sore loser. I appreciate that for just pointing out that uninterested party and master made a decent point. btw, Why didn't Pirahna Farm disclose anything?

Interestingly, the people defending Trevor seems to be Trevor himself or folks who made it to the final (i.e. Pirahnas). Consequently, those comments don't hold a lot of weight with me. Hard to say 'trust me' when it's trust that's at issue.
